Alpine Skiing: American Miller Wins Men's Overall World Cup Title

Downhill skier Bode Miller of the United States has become the first American in 22 years to win his sport's overall World Cup title.

American Phil Mahre won the overall title in 1983, 1982, and 1981.

The 27-year-old Miller clinched the 2005 men's World Cup overall championship Saturday, with a second place finish in a giant slalom race in Lenzerheide, Switzerland.

The combined time of 2:11.19 minutes gives Miller an unbeatable 204 point lead in the overall standings over Austrian rival Benjamin Raich heading into Sunday's season-ending slalom race.

Austria's Stephan Goergl won Saturday's giant slalom event (2:10.51), and Raich was third (2:11.31), a fraction of a second behind Miller. Last year's overall World Cup champion, Hermann Maier of Austria, was fourth (2:11.35).
