Afghan Blast Kills Father, 3 Children

Officials in western Afghanistan say a car has hit a roadside bomb, killing a father and his three children. Authorities say the mother was wounded in Tuesday's blast.

The United Nations said Monday, violence in Afghanistan is up 24 percent compared to this time last year. The U.N. said it blames insurgents for 84 percent of the deaths.

Afghan villagers pray for the victims of a roadside bomb in Laghman province June 3, 2013.

In eastern Afghanistan Monday, seven people died in Laghman province when their vehicle struck a land mine.

Elsewhere Monday in eastern Afghanistan, a suicide bomber, targeting a U.S. military convoy, killed at least 10 school children, one Afghan police officer and two coalition service members.

Local officials say the bomber was on a motorcycle when the attack happened near the Pakistani border.

The Taliban have repeatedly said they do not target civilians in their battle against the Afghan government and foreign troops, but their attacks often kill non-combatants.
