Afghan authorities say a suicide bomber detonated his vehicle, killing one police officer and wounding at least two more on the outskirts the capital, Kabul.

Afghan security officials said the police were following the bomber's car to prevent him from entering the capital Thursday.

In recent weeks, Afghanistan has seen waves of suicide bombings - 12 in Kabul in the past month alone - and commando-style assaults by the Islamist insurgents, who are seeking to make territorial gains and to spread uncertainty as most foreign troops withdraw at the end of the month after 13 years.

Earlier this week, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani condemned the surge in deadly attacks by the Taliban, calling the attacks on civilian and military targets “un-Islamic.”
