Burma's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi delivers a speech during a meeting with a group of Burmese citizens residing in Tokyo, Japan, Apr 13, 2013.

Burmese democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has arrived in Japan for a weeklong visit, her first to that country in nearly three decades.

Aung San Suu Kyi is expected to meet with Japanese leaders, including Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida, to ask for support for her country's democratic reforms.

The Nobel Peace laureate landed Saturday in Tokyo.

During her stay, she is expected to visit Kyoto University where she spent time as a visiting scholar in the mid-1980s, before Burma placed her under house arrest for the better part of two decades.

Aung San Suu Kyi's father - Burma's original democracy leader - also spent time in Japan where the family is well-respected.
