Australia's New PM Feels 'Weight of Responsibility'

Australia's incoming prime minister says he ready to get to work immediately.

One day after Tony Abbott's party easily won national elections, the prime minister-elect started Sunday with a bike ride, then said he would spend the rest of the day getting briefings from senior public servants.

Abbott's opposition Liberal-National coalition won a crushing victory Saturday against the Labor party, which has been in power for six years.

In an interview with Australia's Herald Sun newspaper, Abbott said the "two most urgent priorities" of his administration are getting rid of the tax on carbon emissions and stopping asylum-seeker boats.

Abbott told the newspaper there is an "extraordinary weight of responsibility" with his new position.

Abbott told the Herald Sun he had been preparing his "whole life" to become Australia's leader.

The election was held just three months after Prime Minister Kevin Rudd ousted Australia's first female prime minister, Julia Gillard, in a party leadership challenge intended to better position Labor for the national win.

The outgoing prime minister announced he would step down as Labor leader.
