Caribbean Braces for Hurricane Danny

A satellite image taken at 1:45 p.m. EDT on Aug. 21, 2015, and released by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, shows Hurricane Danny over the Atlantic Ocean.

Tropical storm watches are out for a number of popular Caribbean resort islands as Hurricane Danny moves closer.

Danny is the first Atlantic storm of this year’s hurricane season. As of midday Saturday (local time) Danny was a Category 1 hurricane with top sustained winds of some 135 kilometers per hour.

Forecasters expect Danny to weaken to a tropical storm by the time it strikes the Leeward Islands Sunday or Monday, but say it could still dump as much as 10 centimeters of rain.

The storm could also bring much-needed rain to parts of Puerto Rico, which is suffering one of the worst droughts in its history.
