* Congressman Stephen Scalise was among several people wounded when a gunman opened fire as Republican lawmakers were practicing for an annual baseball game outside Washington.
* Scalise, 51, was shot in the left hip. After surgery, he is listed in critical condition at a Washington hospital.
* Also wounded: Capitol Police officers Crystal Griner and David Bailey, lobbyist Matt Mika and Zachary Barth, a staff member for Congressman Roger Williams.
* The gunman was identified as James Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Illinois. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died from injuries suffered in a shootout with law enforcement officers.
* FBI special agent in charge Tim Slater said it is "too early to say" whether Wednesday's shooting was an act of terrorism, or whether Scalise was targeted.
* The suspect was a harsh critic of President Donald Trump, according to social media accounts allegedly associated with him.
* President Donald Trump called for unity following the incident, as did House Speaker Paul Ryan and House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi.
* Senator Bernie Sanders said Hodgkinson apparently volunteered on his presidential campaign. But Sanders, an independent from Vermont, said: "I am sickened by this despicable act."
* Thursday night's baseball game between congressional Democrats and Republicans will go on as scheduled.
