A massive landslide triggered by heavy rains in northeastern Nepal has killed at least eight people and left dozens missing.

Officials say the landslide struck in the early hours of Saturday and the death toll could rise, because many houses were buried under piles of rock and soil or submerged by rising water.

The landslide also created a mud dam blocking the Sunkoshi river creating a lake about 60 kilometers northeast of Kathmandu.

Authorities fear the dam could burst and wash away villages below.

The government has declared the area a flood crisis zone and has ordered the army to use explosives to try to clear the river.
