Security forces in violence-hit Indian Kashmir shot and killed two protesters Saturday, a day after four others were killed in demonstrations against Indian rule.
Police say a young man was killed and several others injured when security forces opened fire on a group of protesters trying to attack a police camp in Naidkhai village, just north of the main city of Srinigar. Another person was killed when police opened fire on rock-throwing protesters in Baramulla.
The latest violence brought to six the number of people killed in pro-independence protests in the last two days, with more than 75 injured.
Thousands of people across the Kashmir valley staged demonstrations Saturday despite a curfew put in place after Friday's violence.
In northwest Sopore, angry villagers torched a railroad station. While in the town of Kreeri, three protesters were injured after security forces repelled a group setting fire to a counterinsurgency police camp.
Indian security forces have been accused of killing a total of 23 Kashmiri civilians over the past two months in almost daily protests that first erupted after the shooting death of a 17-year-old in June.
Authorities have tried with little success to quell the violence by imposing an on-and-off curfew across the Kashmir valley.
Muslim separatists in Kashmir have been fighting for independence from India or a merger with Muslim-majority Pakistan for more than 20 years. Tens of thousands of people have died in the conflict.
