Iran says it has opened two uranium mines and a yellow cake production plant in central Yazd province.
State media said Tuesday the uranium ore extracted at the mines will be turned into yellow cake, a substance that can then be converted and enriched into nuclear fuel.
Iran says the facilities can produce up to 60 tons of yellow cake a year. The announcement comes as Iran marks it's National Day of Nuclear Technology.
The United Nations Security Council has demanded in multiple resolutions that Iran suspend all enrichment-related activities and allow U.N. inspectors to access its nuclear facilities. Several countries, including the United States, have imposed their own additional measures in an effort to pressure Iran, amid suspicions Tehran is working to develop nuclear weapons.
Talks between Iran and six world powers about the country's nuclear program ended last week with the two sides "far apart" and with no agreement for further meetings.
Iran has long maintained that its nuclear program is solely for power generation and research purposes.
