A U.S.-based intelligence group says the Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for a deadly shooting earlier this week at a historic fortress in Russia's volatile North Caucasus region of Dagestan.
The SITE intelligence group, which monitors terrorist activity, quoted IS as claiming it targeted a gathering of Russian intelligence officers in the town of Derbent in southern Dagestan.
The shooting incident late Tuesday at Naryn-Kala fortress left one person dead and at least 10 others wounded. IS said the person killed was an intelligence officer.
Some local tourists were standing on a viewing platform near the shooting.
Initial news reports said the tourists were injured when a barrage of bullets was fired from the woods. Twelve were injured in the attack and one later died of his wounds. Reports said the person who died was one of two border guards among the group of visitors.
Violence is familiar in Dagestan, where Muslim separatists have been fighting the Russian government for years. But attacks on visitors to the region are rare.
