South African peace icon Nelson Mandela has returned to his Johannesburg home following a successful medical examination at a Pretoria hospital. He was admitted a day ago for a scheduled medical check-up.

South Africa's presidency said Sunday that doctors have completed all scheduled tests, that Mr. Mandela is well and, as before, his health remains under the management of a medical team.

Presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj said there is "no reason for any alarm" as doctors conduct tests on the 94-year-old Nobel Peace laureate and former president.

Mandela was hospitalized in December for a lung infection.

He spent nearly three decades in prison for opposing apartheid in South Africa and became a symbol of the nation's peaceful transition to a democratic government after decades of suppression by the white minority. He became South Africa's first black president in 1994.
