Pakistan Train Derailment Kills 12

Baluchistan, Pakistan

A train derailed Tuesday in Pakistan southwestern Baluchistan province, killing at least 12 people and injuring more than 50 others.

The train was carrying nearly 300 passengers when it went off the tracks in the mountainous Bolan district near Quetta on its way to Rawalpindi.

Officials blamed the accident on a brake failure.

The train's driver and two assistants were among those killed.

Pakistani military helicopters joined the civilian rescue effort and airlifted some of the injured to hospitals in nearby cities.
