South African prosecutors say Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius shot his girlfriend through a bathroom door in an act of premeditated murder, while his defense argues it was an accident and that he should be set free on bail.
The two sides used a hearing Tuesday in Pretoria to present their versions of the events last Thursday that resulted in the death of Reeva Steenkamp. Her family held a private funeral Tuesday in Port Elizabeth while the hearing was taking place.
Prosecutors said Pistorius put on his prosthetic legs, walked seven meters across his bedroom and fired four times through the locked bathroom door. They said the couple had an argument and that Pistorius knew she was in the the bathroom.
The defense questioned the prosecution's evidence, and said the shooting was not murder.
Investigators have said Steenkamp was shot by a 9-millimeter pistol registered to Pistorius.
Pistorius is regarded as a sports hero and national icon in South Africa. He made history in August when he became the first double amputee to run at the Olympics.
He is known as the "blade runner" for competing on high-tech artificial legs.
