Reports: Blasts and Gunfire in Kenyan Town

Reports from northeastern Kenya said unknown assailants have set off explosions in the town of Wajir.

The Kenyan Red Cross said on its Twitter feed that "twin explosions and heavy gunfire" rocked Wajir Wednesday evening, local time.

A Kenyan newspaper, the Standard, said the attackers opened fire while driving past a church, injuring three victims, then dropped suspected grenades.

The paper cites a local police chief as saying officers are in control of the situation and are trying to hunt down the gunmen.

Wajir is located about 500 kilometers northeast of Nairobi, near the Kenyan-Somali border.

The attack comes four days after the Somali militant group al-Shabab attacked a Nairobi shopping mall, killing more than 65 people.
