Supreme Court Justice Undergoes Heart Procedure

FILE - Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg speaks to the Northern Virginia Technology Council in Reston, Va, on Dec. 17, 2013.

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has had a stent implanted during a heart procedure to address a blockage in her right coronary artery, according to a court statement.

The oldest member of the nation's highest court was resting comfortably after surgery and is likely to leave the hospital within 48 hours.

Ginsburg was taken to the hospital by ambulance Tuesday after she "experienced discomfort'' during routine exercise with her personal trainer.

The 81-year-old jurist has had several health issues in the past 15 years but has not missed a day in court. She was diagnosed with colon cancer in 1999 and underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. A decade later, she had surgery for pancreatic cancer, a disease that was caught in its infancy.

A stent is a mesh tube used to improve blood flow in clogged arteries.
