Snow Closes Government Offices in Washington

Snow and freezing rain fall on the Supreme Court and Capitol in Washington, prompting many agencies of the federal government to close for the wintry weather, Dec. 10, 2013.

A snowstorm that blanketed the U.S. capital led to closure Tuesday of many federal government offices in Washington.

The National Weather Service posted winter storm warnings for a wide area around Washington, where up to 15 centimeters of snowfall is expected, and as far north as Philadelphia.

Congress remained in session, but some hearings on on Capitol Hill were postponed due to the weather.

Airlines delayed or canceled hundreds of flights to and from cities near the U.S. Atlantic coast.

Tuesday was the third day of delays for many air travelers. An earlier winter storm on Sunday and early Monday dumped snow and ice on portions of Maryland and Pennsylvania.
