The South African presidency says former president Nelson Mandela's health is improving two months after he was admitted to Pretoria hospital for treatment of a recurring lung infection.

In a statement issued Sunday, the office of Jacob Zuma said the 95-year-old Mandela is making "slow but steady" progress but remains in critical condition.

The youngest daughter of South Africa's first democratically elected black leader said Friday her father was able to sit up by himself. He spent 27 years in prison under white minority rule until winning a 1994 presidential election that marked the end of South Africa's apartheid system.

The South African government has released few details about Mandela's illness, citing privacy concerns. Many South Africans see him as the father of their nation and have been praying for his recovery.
