One Dead in Southern Thailand Bombing

Thai bomb squad officers examine the wreckage of a car after an explosion outside a hotel in Pattani province, southern Thailand, Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2016.

One person is dead and more than 30 wounded after a car bomb detonated in southern Thailand Tuesday.

Authorities say the vehicle was parked outside a hotel in the coastal town of Pattani, causing massive damage to the hotel entrance and several nearby buildings, including a karaoke bar and massage parlor. All the victims were Thai nationals.

A bomb planted in the hotel's parking lot detonated just minutes earlier, but police say no one was injured.

Tuesday's attack happened in the aftermath of a wave of coordinated bombings in a number of resort towns in southern Thailand between August 11-12 that killed four people and wounded dozens more. The region has been engulfed by a 12-year insurgency carried out by Muslim separatists in the provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat that has left more than 6,500 people dead.
