Suicide Bombing Kills 27 in Pakistan

Pakistani paramedics shift an injured man into the hospital after a suicide blast in Mardan at the gathering of funeral prayers, in Peshawar, June 18, 2013.

A suicide bomber has detonated explosives at a crowded funeral in northwestern Pakistan, killing at least 27 people, including a provincial lawmaker.

There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the attack, which took place on Tuesday in the Mardan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

The province is located along the Afghan border where the Taliban and other militants have hideouts.

Investigators said at least 40 people were wounded in the bombing, which they said appeared to target Imran Mohmand Mohmand who was killed in the attack. The lawmaker was elected to the provincial assembly in May.
