U-Conn Women Win Record 89th Consecutive Basketball Game

The University of Connecticut women's basketball team has won its 89th consecutive game, dominating visiting Florida State University, 93-62.

With the victory Tuesday, the Huskies surpassed the winning streak set by the UCLA men's program, coached by the legendary John Wooden, between 1971 and 1974. The record-setting win came just two days after the Huskies defeated number-11 Ohio State to tie UCLA's mark.

Connecticut, coached by Geno Auriemma, has not lost a game since April 6, 2008, when it was beaten by Stanford in the semifinals of the National Collegiate Athletic Association championship tournament. Auriemma called it an amazing accomplishment for his players.

"It is pretty significant to those kids because they have heard so much about it and they know what it all means and I know they were excited all day," Auriemma says, "And I am glad they came out and played the way they did for the majority of the game. And as I said earlier, I am constantly amazed by these kids and what they are able to do."

The number-one-ranked Huskies were led by star Maya Moore, who scored a career-high 41 points. But Moore says the record streak shows how well they play as a team.

"It is remarkable," Moore says, "And I think the more attention that we can get, hopefully the more people can see that in our play and will come to appreciate how we play together, how we play unselfish and how excited we get for each other."

During their record run, the Huskies defeated 16 top-10 teams, with five of those wins coming against the second-ranked team.
