Ukraine's Parliament Refuses PM Resignation

Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk speaks to the parliament in Kyiv, Ukraine, July 24, 2014.

Ukraine's parliament has rejected the resignation of Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, who announced last week his intention to step down after the two parties supporting him left the ruling coalition.

The legislature voted Thursday not to accept Yatsenyuk's resignation, despite his loss of political backing.

The lawmakers also approved legislation backed by Yatsenyuk to help fund the fight against pro-Russian separatists in the east. The prime minister had warned that without the funding, Ukraine would default on its debt, undermining a $17 billion loan package from the International Monetary Fund.

President Petro Poroshenko welcomed Thursday's funding vote, praising the lawmakers for working together even after the coalition’s breakdown.

Despite international assistance, Ukraine has struggled to meet its financial commitments, with the conflict in the east adding to its expenses.
