EU Set to Provide $125 Million for African Troops in Darfur

update

Officials from the European Union (EU) say the regional bloc is likely to provide $125 million to support an African force in Sudan's troubled Darfur region.

EU foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, is expected to announce the offer during a trip to Africa this weekend.

Mr. Solana leaves Friday for Ethiopia, where he will meet with African Union officials for talks on the Darfur crisis. He will then travel to Sudan where he is scheduled to meet with President Omar al-Bashir.

The African Union agreed this week to increase its force monitoring a cease-fire in Darfur from the current 400 to more than 3,300 personnel.

The United Nations estimates violence in Darfur has left tens of thousands of people dead and displaced 1.5 million others.
