High Waters Cover 80 Percent of Venice

update

Officials in Venice, Italy say high waters have covered 80 percent of the city.

On Sunday, city officials reported such tourist spots as St. Mark's Square covered with water. Officials built raised wooden walkways there for pedestrians.

Venice, built on a lagoon, is prone to periodic flooding. The government is planning to build barriers to protect the city from high tides in the Adriatic Sea.
