German champion Werder Bremen also advanced with a 2-0 triumph over Valencia of Spain. Arsenal of England moves on with a 2-0 victory over Rosenborg of Norway.
On Wednesday, nine-time winner Real Madrid of Spain and four-time winner Liverpool both need a win to remain in contention. Monaco, last season's Champions League runner-up, needs at least a draw.
Nine clubs have already qualified for the next round -- Italy's Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan, England's Chelsea and Manchester United, Germany's Bayern Munich, French champion Lyon, Dutch club PSV Eindhoven and Barcelona of Spain.
