Everton has jumped to second place in the English Premier League with a 1-0 home win against cross-town rival Liverpool.
Everton now has 36 points, but has played one more game than leader Chelsea and third-place Arsenal, who meet on Sunday. Arsenal, which plays at home, will reclaim second place with a win.
In the German Bundesliga's last round before the winter pause, Bayern Munich, the leader, came back from a two-goal deficit to grab a 2-2 home tie against Stuttgart. Rival Schalke could do no better than a 1-1 tie against Freiburg.
So, after 17 rounds, Bayern and Schalke both have 34 points, but Bayern retains the top spot on goal differential.
In Spain, Barcelona leads Albacete 1-0 early in the day's only game. Second-place Real Madrid welcomes Real Sociedad on Sunday.
