Authorities in the Philippines are trying to confirm a report that the leader of the Abu Sayyaf kidnap gang was killed in an air raid.
A military informant claims that Khaddafy Janjalani was killed last month during an air strike on a rebel hideout in the southern province of Mindanao.
Colonel Jerry Jalandoni, a Philippines army commander in Mindanao, said Monday that the Abu Sayyaf leader was meeting with members of the regional terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) when he was killed.
He said members of the separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front, which has denied links with JI and Abu Sayyaf, later buried the body in the nearby town of Mamasapano.
The colonel said the military is conducting a search of the area.
