Doctors in Shanghai say they have successfully completed an operation to transplant five organs from a single donor to one patient.
The operation at Shanghai's Ruijin Hospital involved the transplant of an intestinal tract, stomach, spleen, liver and pancreas into a 38-year-old woman. The patient suffered from cancerous and non-cancerous polyps that covered her entire digestive system.
The hospital's chief surgeon says the patient is recovering well.
China says the transplant is the first of its kind to be successfully performed in Asia. Similar operations have been performed before in the United States.
