Actor Jerry Orbach Dies

Actor Jerry Orbach, long-running star of the hit U.S. crime-and-justice television show Law and Order has died of prostate cancer. He was 69-years-old.

A spokeswoman for the agency that represents the television series says Orbach died late Tuesday in New York City.

Originally a stage actor, Orbach starred in hit musicals including Carnival, Chicago and 42nd Street. He won a Tony Award for his performance in the musical Promises, Promises. Orbach was also an original cast member of the long-running stage production of The Fantasticks.

Orbach sought to break into film and television in the 1980's and 1990's. He portrayed detective Lennie Briscoe for the first 12 seasons of the Law and Order television series.
