US Soldier, Afghan Killed In Western Afghanistan

The U.S. military says an American soldier and an Afghan citizen were killed Sunday in a clash in western Afghanistan.

A brief statement says U.S. troops "came under fire from enemy forces" as they were searching a compound near Shindand airfield in Herat province.

The U.S. statement did not identify the Afghan citizen who was killed, nor did it indicate how he was involved in the incident.

Several hours later, a group of armed men tried to kidnap an American aid worker in the Afghan capital, Kabul.

Afghan police say the men confronted the elderly American as he was waiting outside his office in a quiet street. They say the gunmen snatched his bag and tried to force him into a waiting car but gave up when he resisted.
