Costa Rica Declares National Emergency Following Heavy Rains

update

Costa Rican President Abel Pacheco has declared a national emergency in response to three days of heavy rains that forced thousands of residents along the country's Caribbean coast to flee their homes.

Authorities say about 7,500 Costa Ricans were affected by the storms, which left at least one person dead. An eight-year-old boy and four members of the same family are also reported missing.

Homes and rivers have been flooded and at least a dozen bridges destroyed in the Central American nation.

The heavy downpours also left neighboring Panama waterlogged. Officials there say the severe weather - which also caused widespread flooding - is expected to continue for another 24 hours.
