12 Killed in Western China Bus Explosion

At least 12 people have been killed and two others injured in a bus explosion in northwest China's tense Xinjiang province.

State-run media quote authorities as saying the bus was on its way from the city of Karamay, 200 kilometers northwest of Urumqi, Xinjiang's capital to Usu.

Details about the number of people on the bus were not immediately available. It is also unclear what caused the explosion or if the blast is linked to separatist violence.

Turkic speaking Uighur separatists in the region have been fighting to re-establish an independent state of East Turkestan in Xinjiang. They accuse the ruling Chinese of political, religious and cultural repression on the minority Uighurs.
