Home country player Sania Mirza has become the first Indian to win a singles event on the Women's Tennis Association tour, with a three-set victory in the Hyderabad Open.
Playing with a heavily bandaged thigh Saturday, the 18-year-old wild card entry upset ninth-seeded Alyona Bondarenko of Ukraine, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.
Earlier this year, Mirza became the first Indian woman to advance to the third round of a Grand Slam event when she did so at the Australian Open. She lost to eventual winner Serena Willams of the United States.
