Defending champion Andy Roddick of the United States has advanced to the semifinals of the SAP open tennis tournament in San Jose, California, but second seed Andre Agassi made an early exit in the quarterfinals Friday.
The top seeded Roddick won a three-set match 3-6, 7-6, 7-5 against Sweden's Thomas Enqvist to advance.
Saturday, Roddick will take on third-seeded German Tommy Haas, who got by eighth seed Max Mirnyi of Belarus in three sets 6-7, 7-6, 6-2 Friday.
Agassi of the United States was easily dismissed in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 by seventh seed Jurgen Melzer of Austria. The loss ends Agassi's bid to win a record sixth title at San Jose.
The hard-hitting Melzer will take on Cyril Saulnier of France in Saturday's other semifinal match. The unseeded Frenchman advanced Friday with a straight sets 6-2, 6-4 upset of fourth seed Vince Spadea of the United States.
