Anti-Mugabe Protesters Gather at Zimbabwe's Borders

Protesters from South Africa and Zambia gathered near their countries' borders with Zimbabwe Saturday to protest against the policies President Robert Mugabe.

Thousands of people gathered in the South African town of Musina for a rally and candlelight vigil to protest human rights abuses in Zimbabwe. Organizers say a smaller event is under way in the Zambian town of Livingstone.

Amnesty International and other groups say the governments of Zimbabwe and Mozambique blocked border rallies planned for those countries.

South African trade unionists gathered at the Beit Bridge border crossing Friday to show support for opposition activists in advance of Zimbabwe's March 31 parliamentary elections.

President Mugabe has been in power since 1980. His opponents say elections in 2000 and 2002 were marred by fraud.
