Computer hackers have gained access to the personal records of some 59,000 people affiliated with a California university.
A California State University spokesman said officials are contacting students, faculty and staff to notify them that their Social Security numbers and other data may have been viewed by hackers three weeks ago.
Officials said they could not be sure what information was accessed during the computer attack, but they had no indication that the hackers have used the personal information.
In several recent prominent cases, computer hackers have gained access to hundreds of thousands of people's personal records in university and corporate databases.
Analysts say using stolen personal information, in a crime known as "identity-theft," is among America's fastest-growing crimes.
