Soccer: Bahrain Beats North Korea in World Cup Qualifier

Bahrain's football team has scored a 2-1 upset victory over host North Korea in a 2006 World Cup qualifying match in Pyongyang.

In the absence of injured strikers Alaa Hobeil and Rashid Jamal, Husain Ali was the scoring star for Bahrain, tallying both goals. Goalkeeper Mohammed Jaffar was equally impressive at the other end of the field.

For the North Koreans, it was a case of wasted opportunities in front of a noisy capacity crowd of 70,000 as they attacked relentlessly all game long, only to be denied on more than a dozen occasions by Jaffar.

Bahrain held regional powerhouse Iran to a goalless draw last month in their first Group B qualifying game and now has four points in the four-team group, which also includes Japan.

Bahrain plays in Japan next Wednesday, while North Korea hosts Iran.
