Andreev Reaches Semifinals of Valencia Open Tennis Tourney

update

Seventh seeded Igor Andreev of Russia has beaten Spain's Rafael Nadal to reach the semifinals of the Valencia Open tennis tournament in Spain.

Andreev ousted the third-seeded Spanish player in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, to reach the semifinals for the first time this season.

The Russian next faces Ivan Navarro of Spain, a surprise winner over second-seeded Fernando Gonzalez of Chile (6-7, 6-4, 6-4). This tournament marks the first time Navarro has reached the semifinals of an ATP Tour event.

Rain washed out play in the eastern Spanish city and the quarterfinals will be continued Saturday with Albert Costa of Spain taking on countryman and defending champion Fernando Verdasco, and Alberto Martin of Spain playing compatriot David Ferrer.

The tournament is one of several clay-court events that players will use to prepare for the second major tournament of the year, the French Open, which gets underway May 23 in Paris.
