Chad Suspends Mediation Role in Darfur Conflict

update

The Chadian government says it is suspending its role as mediator in Sudan's Darfur crisis, saying it cannot help a nation that supports a rebel movement intent on destabilizing Chad.

On Friday, Chad accused Sudan of threatening its security by recruiting, training, and supplying some 3,000 Chadian rebels close to the border between the two countries.

Chad says it will resume its negotiating role when Sudan dismantles the Chadian rebels.

President Idriss Deby, along with the African Union, has mediated talks to end two-years of civil war in Darfur.

The crisis has sent tens of thousands of Sudanese civilians into Chad - straining relations between the two nations.

Khartoum is accused of backing Arab militias who have committed atrocities to put down a rebellion in Darfur.
