Thailand to Host June 8 N. Korea-Japan Match

update

The International Football Federation says Bangkok, Thailand, will host a World Cup qualifying match between North Korea and Japan -- after FIFA ordered the match moved because of fan trouble in Pyongyang.

Thailand Football Association secretary-general Worawi Makudi said FIFA had asked if Thailand would host the June 8 match. Thailand agreed and the match is scheduled for Bangkok's Rajamangala National Stadium.

Last week, FIFA ordered North Korea to play the World Cup qualifier in a neutral country after fans threw bottles, chairs and other objects on the field to protest a referee's call in a 2-0 loss to Iran in March. FIFA also cited trouble in North Korea's match against Bahrain March 25.

In addition to the move, the governing body fined the North Korea Football Association $16,800.

North Korea is trying to reach the World Cup for the first time in 40 years. However, the North Koreans are winless so far in World Cup qualifying.
