Canada has 2-1 victory Over Ukraine World Ice Hockey Championships


Rick Nash has scored his tournament-high ninth goal to lead Canada to a 2-1 victory over Ukraine at the World Ice Hockey Championships in Austria.

The victory Tuesday in Innsbruck sealed a second place finish for Canada in Group-F at the end of the second round of play. Sweden crushed Latvia, 9-1, in a late game to win Group-F.

The Czech Republic placed second in Group-E behind Russia with a 5-1 victory over Belarus. Slovakia slipped to third place despite beating Kazakhstan, 3-1, in Vienna. Miroslav Satan, Ziggy Palffy, and Michael Handzus scored for the Slovaks.

Sweden will skate against Switzerland when the quarterfinals get underway on Thursday. Canada will meet Slovakia. The United States will face the Czech Republic. Unbeaten Russia will play Finland.

Earlier, Kasper Degn scored halfway through the third period to give Denmark a 3-2 victory over Germany and avoid relegation. Austria meets Slovenia in the last relegation-round game Wednesday. The two top teams will stay in the championship next year, while the last two are demoted.
