A Chinese team has climbed to the top of Mount Everest to find out if the world's tallest mountain is getting even taller.
China's official Xinhua news agency says 24 researchers and mountaineers put a survey beacon at Mount Everest's summit Sunday and set up global positioning and radar equipment to measure its precise height.
In the 1950s, an Indian survey found the mountain to be about 8,848 meters. But in 1999, a U.S. team re-measured the mountain using global positioning technology and concluded it was two meters higher.
Scientists say movement of the earth's tectonic plates is pushing Everest upward. The mountain, known to Chinese as Qomolangma, straddles the border between China and Nepal.
Reuters news agency says results of the latest tests will be announced in August.
