Mudslides Kill 14 in India's Northeast Nagaland State

update

Mudslides caused by heavy rains have killed at least 14 people in northeastern India.

Police say the casualties occurred at a village in Mokokchung district, a hilly area of Nagaland state. A river of mud swamped the area and shattered several homes while residents were asleep early Thursday.

Excavations are under way Friday, and rescue workers say they fear the disaster may have claimed further victims.

In addition to the mudslides, three days of heavy rain in Nagaland have blocked roads and disrupted communications. Authorities are on alert in neighboring Assam state, where the rain-swollen Brahmaputra River is nearing flood stage.
