Sri Lankan officials say navy personnel have shot and killed a suspected Tamil Tiger rebel during a gunfight - amid a series of clashes that have threatened a fragile three-year truce.
Military officials say the gunfight occurred Thursday in eastern Trincomalee district.
Earlier, security forces went on high alert in several eastern districts following a surge in attacks on Tamil Tiger rebels. The military blames the attacks on a breakaway faction of the Tamil Tigers. The rebels blame the military.
On Wednesday, the rebels began shutting down political offices in government-controlled areas, accusing authorities of failing to protect rebels traveling through those regions.
