Actor James Doohan, best known for his role as chief engineer "Scotty" on television's original Star Trek series, has died.
Doohan's manager said the Canadian-born actor died Wednesday at home in Redmond, Washington at age 85. The cause of death was pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease.
Doohan played the Scottish accented engineer Montgomery "Scotty" Scott. His character operated the transporter device used to "beam" crew members to and from the U.S.S. Starship Enterprise. The role inspired the popular phrase "Beam me up, Scotty."
Star Trek was on television from 1966 until 1969. The show led to several Star Trek movies in which Doohan reprised his role, and the series Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Doohan was honored with a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame last August. His remains are to be cremated and launched into space.
