Women's Tennis: Davenport, Mauresmo Face Off in Pilot Pen Finals

Lindsay Davenport of the United States will take on second seed Amelie Mauresmo of France in Saturday's final of the Pilot Pen women's tennis Championship in the eastern U.S. state of Connecticut.

Davenport took just 72 minutes to beat Russian Anna Chakvetadze in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) Friday to advance to the finals. The victory returns Davenport to the world number one ranking, replacing young Russian sensation Maria Sharapova, who held the top spot for only one week. Prior to that, Davenport had been in the number one spot since October.

Mauresmo reached the finals after winning a grueling three-hour, three-set marathon (4-6, 7-6, 6-2) against Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues.

Davenport has played in the finals at this event five times, but has never won it. She and Mauresmo last met in the semifinals at Wimbledon, with Davenport winning that match. She has beaten Mauresmo in nine of their 12 career meetings.

In men's quarterfinal action, Spain's Tommy Robredo was upset by unseeded Romanian Victor Hanescu in a three set match (6-7, 6-4, 6-4). Others advancing were third seed David Ferrer of Spain along with countryman and fifth seed Feliciano Lopez, and unseeded American James Blake.

The Pilot Pen hard court event is the final tournament before the U.S. Open, which begins Monday in New York. The U.S. Open is the last major Grand Slam event of the season.
