Hurricane Stan Blamed for 130 Deaths in Mexico, Central America

update

Mexican authorities say huge mudslides, flooding and torrential rains from Hurricane Stan's recent onslaught have killed at least 130 people in Central America and Mexico.

Stan came ashore along Mexico's Gulf Coast on Tuesday, knocking down trees and ripping the roofs off houses with winds of 130 kilometers per hour. Rivers also burst their banks in southern Mexico, washing away bridges and ripping apart houses and buildings. Additionally, Stan has been blamed for at least 50 deaths in both El Salvador and Guatemala, where mudslides buried houses.

Forecasters say the storm is now a tropical depression and dissipating over the mountains of southeastern Mexico, but they warn it is still capable of producing additional heavy rains and flooding.
