Committee to Protect Journalists Requests Investigation of Belarusian Reporter's Death

update

The Committee to Protect Journalists says it wants an investigation into the death of a Belarusian reporter to determine if he was killed in retaliation for his journalistic work.

Vasily Grodnikov was found dead Tuesday in his home near Minsk. Relatives who found the body say the walls and floors were covered with blood and everything in the house had been turned over.

The Committee to Protect Journalists says an autopsy determined Mr. Grodnikov died of a head wound. However, the Interior Ministry for the Minsk region says he died of a stroke, and there was no sign of a struggle at his apartment.

Mr. Grodnikov wrote for the opposition newspaper Narodnaya Volya. Belarusian authorities revoked its printing contract last year, forcing the newspaper to print in Russia. State-run news kiosks are barred from selling the publication.
