Five U.S. Marines have been accused of rape in the Philippines.
U.S. officials said Thursday the five are in the custody of the U.S. embassy in Manila pending further investigation.
The Marines are accused of raping a Filipino woman on Tuesday in Subic Bay, a former U.S. naval base that has been transformed into an industrial and recreational hub north of Manila.
The five Marines were on leave at the time, after taking part in war games with the Philippine military.
U.S. embassy officials have pledged full cooperation with Philippine authorities in the matter.
