Malawi Vice President Arrested on Corruption Charges

update

In Malawi, the police have arrested Vice President Cassim Chilumpha on corruption charges. The vice president, who is a member of the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF), was in court Thursday morning.

The arrest comes amid a power struggle between President Bingu Wa Mutharika and his predecessor, Bakili Muluzi. The UDF has been spearheading a drive to impeach Mr. Mutharika. But political observers believe Vice President Chilumpha came under investigation because he criticized the government for arresting the former speaker of parliament, Sam Mpasu, and lawmaker Maxwell Milanzi.
